G'day!

Seems to me there's been a change in the ACL between J3.4.1 and J3.4.3.

Seems that where an Administrator could access the template files in the backend via the Template Manager in J3.4.1, in J3.4.3 only a Super User can. Please see the screenshots.

This should not be a problem but rather a good move, preventing an Administrator from getting in where he's beyond his ability. Trouble is, the Administrator in question doesn't see it that way. He made a bit of a mess when the site was in dev stage, in J3.4.1, in the gantry-custom.css file. I'm afraid of far worse.

And yes: Backup, Backup, Backup!

I'd appreciate confirmation of my observation. It seems like a big task to give Administrator user group Super user access and then remove that access from everything else.

Thanks,
Laurie.

I'm not really sure. It's possible (if you want to tinker around with the ACL settings for the template) to allow Administrators (as opposed to Super Users) to be able to edit files/settings or whatever but this is always tricky and needs to be done with caution.

Some things in the Joomla back-end can be modified by Administrators and some things can't. I'm fairly sure there's a list of what Super Users can do that Administrators cannot do - one obvious example is that Administrators cannot edit Super Users accounts and they can't tweak the global configuration settings.

Whether it's a good thing or not (to allow Administrators to edit template files/settings) is entirely a matter of personal opinion. I don't know if this ability was removed between J! 3.4.1 and J! 3.4.3; that's something that you might find out more about by looking at the J! 3.4.2 and J! 3.4.3 release notes (or changelog).

Thanks Michael!

I can't find anything on the web about such a change in Joomla. However, a colleague has suggested I look into whether the change has been brought about by the new version of the Gantry template or framework. I'll check this out and let you know.

Thanks,
Laurie.
