Duplicate URL was created by Laurie
G'day there!

I've built a virtumart sales site for a client.

When doing a site:domain.com search on Google, I discovered a duplicate site at the URL domain.com/~username

username is the cPanel/FTP username.

* I doubt Virtumart would have created this duplicate URL. Virtumart seems to have very good SEO.

* The client ill-advisedly signed up for some SEO system. Could the SEO firm have created the duplicate site?

* Any other explanation?

Note: I'm now getting Joomla update notices for the ~username version of the site.

Thanks,
Laurie.

I don't have any explanation and, even though I'm unfamiliar with Virtumart, I don't know how that product could be implicated. My guess is that there's something amiss in pointing the domain-name (domain.com/~username) to the real domain, it's probably something to do with the domain name administration. I haven't encountered this odd scenario before.

Normally these "temporary domains" are resolved in a relatively short amount of time when the DNS servers around the world synch things up. Another possibility is to flush your local DNS cache (in Windows this is done with the command ipconfig /flushdns) and it might be an idea to verify the trace route (the command is tracert domain-name) to double-check the IP address.

Thanks Michael!

The client is away at the moment but as soon as I get the OK I'll look further in to your suggestions, along with other SEO issues.

Laurie.
